“Thanks for the yam, mystery aliens. I’m more of a mashed potatoes guy, but this’ll do. I guess.” -- Carl[1]

A Toraline Root Vegetable is essentially a sweet potato with alchemical uses.[2]

AI Description

Toraline Root Vegetable. Alchemy Material.

This rare tuber only grows in dirt that has been covered by lava. They are very rare. Nobody ever goes digging them up, either. You know why? Because they taste like dogshit, that’s why. They’re pretty much useless. In fact, fuck you for wasting my time with this.

Description

Toraline looks a like a sweet potato and only grows in volcanic soil. The Inventory flags it as as "Very Rare," but its sell value is low.[2] It can be used to create special ink for scrolls or for various lava-themed potions, including a Phase Lava Rock Potion.[4]

Story

Book 4

The Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network (OIPAN) sends Carl a single toraline in a Silver Benefactor Box on the Fifth Floor.[5] Mordecai does not recognize it but alludes to potions that require a similar ingredient, and Carl notes that he hasn't committed any ingredients in the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook to memory.[2] Eventually, Samantha tells Carl about the toraline's applications for lava rock monsters, and Carl uses it to separate Maggie My from Chris Andrews.[4] This is clearly not the vegetable's intended purpose.[6]
