Third Floor


“Princess Donut, Carl, little Mongo, welcome to the third floor. The training levels have concluded. Now the games may truly begin.” -- Mordecai[1]

The Over City is the Dungeon's Third Floor and the first "Volcano Storyline" floor. Although still under the surface of the Earth the floor is designed to look like it's on the surface. An artificial sky is visible and the floor is made of wooden planks. There are hundreds of small, scattered villages surrounded by wide swaths of abandoned city. Where you exited the second floor has no bearing on where you enter this floor. It is completely random. It is significantly smaller than the 1st and 2nd floors. [2]

The Over City is the first of the six special urban "Volcano" storyline floors. That is supposed to span the length of the crater of a huge volcano. The other five layers (floors) are located deeper in the volcano.

Introductory Announcement

"Welcome, again, Crawlers to the third floor!

There are still a few stragglers working on their class and race choices, and that’s okay. The vast majority of you are out and about and just starting to learn about the wonders of the Over City. We welcome you to a Dungeon Crawler World tradition.

You all have made some wondrous and unique choices. Of the just under 700,000 crawlers who’ve made a decision, we have seen almost 40,000 different class choices. Can you believe that? That is a record, and we are very proud to see such diversity.

A couple announcements regarding this third floor. While the bathroom penalties have been removed, we want to remind the crawlers that restrooms still populate this floor. In the villages you may find restrooms in any pub and in some shops. In the ruins, the toilets are just as prevalent as they were on the higher floors. Please do not force us to backtrack.

We are already seeing much interest in the sponsorship program. And while the program doesn’t officially get underway until the fourth floor, potential sponsors now have the ability to put in early bids. Therefore, remember to be as entertaining as possible!

Finally, many of you are discovering new abilities and spells and wish to try them out. We urge you to do so. But this is just a general warning that any attempts of violence against non-combatant NPCs should be avoided. While this practice is technically not against the rules, the Borant corporation wishes to keep the citizenry as safe as possible. As a result, we have adjusted the experience counter for citizens down to zero. In addition, city guards have been given a slight boost in stats.

Layout

Entry Space

When crawlers enter the Third Floor, they are given the choice to change their Race and pick a Class. The entry area has golden brick walls and floors, with an artificial ceiling that looks like stars. A red carpet guides the crawler to their selection area. [3]

Main Floor

The Over City is a sprawling, interconnected level of roughly 300,000km2, composed of numerous small villages surrounded by vast stretches of abandoned urban ruins. Although presented as an above-ground environment, the entire level exists underground, the first 'exterior' setting seen in the dungeon. [4]

This level is part of a larger in-universe mythology, depicting a society that once lived inside a massive, dormant volcano. According to the story, Scolopendra, a monstrous entity at the volcano's base released her nine-tier attack upon the city. The survivors and their descendants inhabit the villages, while the ruins are populated by hostile creatures.

The Over City level introduces several mechanics:

  • NPC Interaction: Non-player characters (NPCs) in the Over City are biologically engineered entities, created and owned by the Borant Corporation. Though living beings, their memories are routinely altered for each new season of the game. They are not aware of their artificial origins, and any inconvenient knowledge is erased between seasons.
  • Guards and Law Enforcement: Villages are patrolled by powerful guards who enforce strict laws. Infractions result in death, as there are no jails or leniency.
  • Shops and Guildhalls: Villages vary in size (tiny to extra-large) and contain class- and race-specific guildhalls, though some races may not have a guild.
  • Night and Day Cycle: The Over City features a simulated day-night cycle. Mobs roam the ruins at all times but are significantly more dangerous at night.
