Stairwells are a feature of the Dungeon that allows for passage between floors. Different floors of the dungeon might have different rules on how to access the stairwells to proceed.
Appearance
Stairwells are generally well-lit. At the bottom of each stairwell is a massive double-wide door engraved with a stylistic, oversized Kua-Tin.[1][2] During Mordecai's crawl, the doors to the stairwells showed the Syndicate logo. [3]

Mechanics
If a crawler goes down a stairwell with low health, their health will automatically refill. [5] If a crawler goes down early they will be held in stasis until the next floor opens. If a crawler goes down during the recommended time frame, 6 hours before collapse, then the crawler can go down to the level early. [6]
Stairwells are indicated on the Map as a white square. The second floor stairwell is labeled: Stairwell to Floor Two. [7]
On the First Floor, Rory tells Carl and Donut: “If we climb down the stairs, we die. You get halfway down, and your body just dissolves.” [8] Carl uses this fact to kill the Rage Elemental on the Second Floor. [9] After the Recap Episode showing its defeat, the rules are changed to no longer disintegrate non-sapient mobs. [10]
If a stairwell is embedded in a relatively moveable object, like a small house or a sheet of metal, it can be moved.[11]
However, under no circumstances can it be moved into a safe room, or from one floor to another. Nor can stairways ever be destroyed.[12]
