SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3
Limp Richard mentions how Soul Crystals are much less stable than Dwarven batteries and are powered by actual souls when Carl is considering buying the Dwarven Battery Fabricator.[1]

During the Vermillion Line Rescue, Carl reads a description for Blister Ghouls that explain the Ghoul Generators are powered by Soul Crystals. The Jikininki Janitor Ghouls at station 12 also have a soul crystal generator.[3]

A group of crawlers at Train yard F blow the Blister Ghoul generator at station 72, killing themselves but freeing up the station for other crawlers to use the Stairwells. The explosion is large enough it is felt throughout the Fourth Floor.[4]
