A permacube generates heat when combined with combustible material such as coal.[1][2] It has an extremely long lifespan and goes dormant when it runs out of coal, but does not turn off. It reactivates a few minutes after the material is shoveled in.[1]
In the Dungeon, Goblins use permacubes instead of Lesser Demons to power steam engines.[1]
