The coffee from the shelter remained heavy on my tongue. The scent of the shelter’s breakfast mixed with the Lysol remained in my memory, and my stomach rumbled. But all I could think about was that lonely dog, left alone to guard an empty gas station on Christmas day.[1]
Lightning Lou was an elderly bloodhound who lived at a gas station near the Shepherd's House in Homestead, Florida, before the transformation.[2]
His bed was located in the back corner of the gas station, beneath a little sign reading "Lightning Lou." He had two bowls of food, plenty of water, and a doggy door leading to a small fenced-in yard.[2]

Book 6
As the second phase of the Eighth Floor draws to a close, the Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network (OIPAN) sends Carl an Emergency Benefactor Box containing a WordArt flyer advertising 7AM Christmas breakfast at the Shepherd's House.[3] While his friends throw a Christmas party, Carl drives his Father's 1965 Harley Davidson Motorcycle forty minutes north to the shelter. He stops at the gas station for a map and some beef jerky and, already feeling introspective and lonely, is deeply stricken by the dog, which was left alone to guard an empty gas station over Christmas weekend. He attempts to pet it, but only manages to dislodge its collar.[2]
Carl arrives at the Shepherd's House, listens to Paulie's speech, steals Paulie's plastic tub, is removed by Orren, and trades the tub for useful items with Quasar's help. Orren offers to teleport Carl back to Donut and the others, but Carl asks Orren to send him back to the dog, explaining, "I just want to say hi to that dog again before I jump back into it.”[1]
