Grimaldi's Traveling Circus

The closer we came to the edge of the circus, the louder the calliope music. The music didn’t change. It was a slow, haunting oom-pah-pah, oom-pah-pah of a polka played at half speed.^[1]

Grimaldi's Traveling Circus is a location on the Third Floor and the main setting for the first part of the Vengeance of the Daughter show. The circus is led by Ringmaster Grimaldi and is populated by the mutated forms of the circus crew after the cataclysm. Tsarina Signet used to be part of the group, but was cast out.

Description

The circus consists of three massive tents surrounded by wagons, cages, and several other tents. The circus plays a slow polka on the calliope to entice curious crawlers. ^[1]

The circus consists of Former Circus Lemurs, giraffes, stilt clowns, fat clowns, Mold Lions, and ogres. There appear to be over a thousand of them.^{[1] [2]}

The entrance of the tent has a massive faded sign that reads "“Grimaldi’s World O’ Freaks, Admission One Gold Coin. No children or those with weak constitutions allowed.” Around the sign are other images showing the following attractions:

• “The Over City’s Fattest Woman”
• “Garth, The Two-Headed Troglodyte”
• “Tiny, The Amazing, Fire-Breathing Gnoll”
• “Tsarina Signet and Her Amazing Battle Squad.” with a red crossed out circle reading "Wanted. Traitor"

Around the circus is a 5 foot high battlement made of rocks, wood, and bones as well as medieval warfare devices. ^[1]

History

When Scolopendra's attack hit, Grimaldi was in the middle of a show. He transformed into a vine while the rest of the crew got infected with the mold parasites, putting them under Grimaldi's control. If any of the crew members die, they return to the vine and are reborn the next day. ^[3]

Book 2

Shortly after finding Grace Bautista 3's corpse, Carl and Donut hear the calliope music and follow the sound. They spy on the circus making war preparations and attempt to stealthy sneak away to find a safe room. As they escape they are attacked by the cauldron mobs, and fall through the floor of a building. When they crawl out of the hole, they meet Tsarina Signet. ^[1]

The following night Tsarina Signet blackmails Carl into helping her attack Grimaldi's Circus again. She successfully casts her Ink Marauder Spell using Heather the Bear's blood. They successfully storm the circus, but Signet is banished from the circus so she is unable to penetrate the outer tent. ^[4]
