Fireball Spell

“I know how fire works, Carl.”[1]

Fireball is a powerful spell that allows the caster to throw a slow-moving orb of explosive, temporary fire at a target. Crawlers may learn the spell from tomes, or gain the spell from items.

Due to the nature of the spell, it should only be used outside or in open spaces.[2] Using it irresponsibly may result in a snarky achievement and/or a Did-You-Really-Just-Cast-Fireball-in-a-Room-This-Small Box.[3]

Level Up

At Level 10, Fireball generates a beachball-sized glob of destructive fire. Although it moves almost lazily through the air, it can bore through flesh and set everything it comes in contact with aflame.[4][5]

At Level 15, Fireball starts as roughly egg-shaped and expands to the size of an open umbrella. Although it moves slower than Magic Missile, it strikes the target with incredible force and can "crisp" entire rooms.[6] Mordecai explains: "A level 15 Fireball is a powerful spell that can ruin the day of most mobs. A level 16 Fireball is literally four times as potent. A level 20 can turn a mountain into an active volcano."[7]

Story

On the Third Floor, Carl casts a Level 15 Fireball using the Fireball or Custard? scratch-off ticket.[6] A few days after seeing the spell in action, Donut decides, "“The flames from Magic Missile aren’t doing it for me anymore. I want something with some kick. Like Fireball."[8]

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 4
Donut's heart is set on learning Fireball. On the Fifth Floor, she grumbles that Wall of Fire Spell is not Fireball, as "that's what I really want."[9]
SPOILERS FOR BOOK 5
Donut finally gets her wish on the Sixth Floor, when Carl loots the Enchanted Obsidian Bracelet of the Raggle Rouser from Akland's corpse. The bracelet, which she immediately equips on her front right leg, allows her to cast a level-10 Fireball once every twenty (20) minutes.[10]

Trivia

  • In the previous Borant Corporation-produced season of Dungeon Crawler World, a crawler used a magical printing press to mass-produce Fireball Scrolls, set the price as low as possible, and purchased his own scrolls from the market. After using the scrolls 200 times, he learned the spell.[11]
