Emberus, the personification of a star’s destructive power, welcomes you into his warm embrace. He welcomes all who accept his core philosophy. Emberus believes power, once held, must never sit idle. It is to be used and never squandered.[1]

Emberus is the god of Sun and Ash, twin brother of Hellik, younger brother of Taranis, and both the son and brother-in-law of Apito.[2][3] One of the "big" gods, Emberus is a contender for the Celestial Ascendency and associated with both fire and light.[4][5][6] Although he had many children, he only truly cared for Geyrun.[4]

AI Description

When viewed on the Fifth Floor:

Sun and Ash God Emberus. Level 250.
Warning: This is a deity. He is invulnerable on this floor.
This is a locked god. There will be no sponsors of this deity this season.
This god has been summoned to this location. Summoning rules apply.

The youngest brother of Taranis, and half of the sun duology, Emberus strongly feels he is the best-suited candidate to ascend to the Celestial Throne. Known to be stoic and indifferent to the suffering of all but those he feels worthy, Emberus can be a just god if the fancy strikes him. The problem is the fancy hasn’t struck in a very long time. He’s usually an unmitigated asshole who’ll arbitrarily burn everyone you know and love just for looking at him funny. He’s considered one of the most unhinged of all the pantheon.

His twin brother is Hellik, another sun god who is quite obsessed with killing both Emberus and big brother Taranis. It’s a very dysfunctional relationship. I guess most families are like this. You probably don’t want to get involved.

Emberus’s very presence can be deadly to crawlers, and that’s just when he’s in his regular form. When he gets emotional, things really start to heat up.

Word on the street is that since his favorite son was murdered by an unknown assailant, Emberus has been acting even kookier than usual. The dude plucked his own eyes out in his grief. It was really gross.[7]

Appearance

Emberus's skin appears to be made of gooey blue-hued rocks when he is calm, of actual curling orange and red flames when emotional, and of "shimmering, smoldering rocky gray dotted with multicolor hotspots" when angry.[8][9] His shifting skin comes together to form his massive, asymmetrical body, which vaguely resembles a muscular human man and appears caved in on the right side when viewed from behind.[8] He radiates scorching heat.[5]

A massive curved horn that smokes like incense juts out of the back of his head on the left side.[8] His empty eye sockets trail smoke and rain blood. A second mouth on the right side of his head glows red and screams; just above it, "his skin was sunken in and flattened, like an ancient injury that had healed poorly."[9]

History

Samantha, who is Emberus's great neice and possibly also his cousin, tells Carl a story about Emberus that may or may not connect him to the Scolopendra/Volcano storyline:

“Once, there was this drunk guy walking home from a pub, and he dropped his torch, and he took a tinkle directly on the flames, snuffing it out. Emberus found out and took offense. He destroyed the entire country. He woke up a volcano and covered the whole world with lava. Even Eris was pissed at him. He’s funny like that. You guys are so fucking dead.”[10]

Emberus went mad with grief and blinded himself after Geyrun's murder. Even though Hellik was in council with Emberus and other gods at the time of the murder, Emberus is convinced that Hellik is the culprit.[2]

Story

Book 4

On the Fifth Floor, Carl activates the Gate of the Feral Gods and accidentally pulls Orthrus out of the Nothing. Emberus immediately leaves the Halls of Ascendency to retrieve Geyrun's missing puppy, but blindly mistakes Tserendolgor for the gigantic dog; he shrieks so loudly at Bubble 18 that he doesn't hear the ruckus as Carl and Donut attempt to escort Orthrus back to him.[4][11][12] With the Dumber of the Flunkies Quest and Get Orthrus Quest running simultaneously, and Quan Ch preparing to slay the dog, Carl chooses to worship Emberus so that he can summon the god with a Celestial Grenade. Emberus arrives as just a floating head and shoulders, and vanishes with Orthhrus just seconds later.[5]

Carl, now an acolyte of Emberus, receives a boon granting a 30-hour 25% constitution buff, and two quests: Find Out Who Killed My Son Quest and Kill Hellik Quest.[2]

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 7

Emberus gives Carl the Kill the Blasphemer Quest when a worshiper of Hellik insults Emberus at the entrance to Club Vanquisher during Operation Snake Pit.[13]

After Carl talks to Hellik in Club Vanquisher, Emberus gives Carl the Fuck my brother. Fuck him to the fires of Sheol. Quest. [14]
