Boss

B-b-b-b Boss Battle![1]

In the dungeon, bosses are powerful mobs that crawlers may need to defeat to complete quests or access stairwells in Boss Battles. When defeated, bosses drop a single item of "persistent loot" that each and every crawler can receive a copy of by looting the boss's body.[2]

Boss Tiers

Bosses are classified as one of six tiers based on strength level. Neighborhood Boss are the most common and easiest to defeat, whereas a Floor Boss is "the biggest, baddest bitch one can come across in Dungeon Crawler World."[2][3]

The first three floors of the Dungeon contain only Neighborhood, Borough, and City Bosses. New crawlers are typically unable to fight Borough Bosses without a large group, and City Bosses can annihilate even large groups of unprepared crawlers. On the First Floor only, bosses are confined to a set arena or chamber, and Borough and City bosses will always guard a stairwell; on all other floors, bosses can wander.[4][5]

Not every boss is tagged as hostile by the System AI. Many white-tagged bosses can be charmed by characters with high charisma; even Province Bosses can be beguiled, provided that the crawler's charisma is 100 points higher than the boss's total charisma plus constitution. To the best of anyone's knowledge, it is not possible to charm a Country or Floor Boss.[6]

Tier Loot Box Star Color Persistent Loot First Appear
Neighborhood Boss Bronze Boss Box Bronze Neighborhood Map First Floor
Borough Boss Silver Boss Box Silver Borough Field Guide First Floor
City Boss Gold Boss Box Gold Map of the Stars First Floor
Province Boss Platinum Boss Box Fourth Floor
Country Boss Legendary Boss Box Treasure Map Sixth Floor
Floor Boss Celestial Boss Box Tenth Floor[7]

Boss Battles

Boss Battles are announced when a crawler is locked into an arena with a boss or, on the Third Floor and lower, engages a boss in combat. The System AI proclaims "B-B-B-Boss Battle!" as though through a loudspeaker as strange, EDM-ish music begins to play. Time freezes as (like something straight from a video game) the combatants' round-framed mugshots appear in the air, followed by "Versus", then stylized metallic font bearing the boss's name. When the announcement ends, all combatants can move again.[8]

After a boss is defeated, the world briefly freezes again as the AI declares the winner. The music stops, the door (if applicable) explodes, and the boss's remaining minions may drop dead or leave.[8]

All crawlers who participated in the fight receive an achievement, a Boss Box, and a star beside their names. The type of Boss Box and the color of the star are determined by the Boss's tier.[2]

Speculation

  • The star color for defeating a country boss is not defined in the text (as far as we can tell). In influential games such as World of Warcraft, Borderlands, Fortnite, etc., "Legendary" is marked by the color Orange. The tier above legendary is typically a light gold or a cyan / pearlescent color.[12][13][14]
