Primal

"The Primals are the progenitors, the first known species to conquer the universe. They are the boogiemen of the cosmos. Nobody knows what they looked like or anything about them other than that they spread across the galaxy, and then one day, they just vanished.” -- Mordecai[1]

Primals are a mysterious and ancient alien race in Syndicate space. Crawlers may choose to the Primal race after arriving on the Dungeon's Third Floor.

In the Dungeon

On the Third Floor, the System AI presents each crawler with a custom list of race options to choose from, including "exclusive" races that offer an additional benefit or skills. A few, but not many, crawlers chose the primal race on Dungeon Crawler World: Earth.[2][3]

AI Description

For the first several seasons of Dungeon Crawler World, all contestants started off as Primals. Primals are blank slates. You will look the same as before. You will obtain all skills associated with your current race, with the following exceptions:

  • -1 to all base stats
  • All higher-tier skills are unlocked and are able to train to 20.
  • Choosing this race unlocks multiple exclusive, earth-based classes.[4]

Mechanics

Crawlers can view a 3D image of their potential race during race selection; however, because no one knows what primals look like, the 3D image for Primals is empty.[2]

Selecting the primal race initially causes the crawler to lose (5) stat points, but in turn unlocks the ability to train any skill above level 15. In contrast, most race and class options only allow crawlers to train up one or two specific skills beyond level 15; however, skills are a slog to train after level 10, and only a few crawlers have ever succeeded in training one or two skills above level 15.[2] Mordecai advises:

"If you choose this instead of human, you’ll miss out on the extra 10 stat points you obtain, and you’ll lose five additional points. It’s like starting five levels behind. That’s a big deal. But it’s not insurmountable. It’s well worth it if you plan your build carefully and dedicate yourself to a few core skills."[5]

Unfortunately for crawlers, the Human race is not associated with any particular skills, and "Adaptability" is most likely a benefit.[2] While Mordecai has never seen a Primal Guild Hall, that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. [6]

History

Mordecai explains to Carl what the Primals are when choosing his race:

“The Primals are the progenitors, the first known species to conquer the universe. They are the boogiemen of the cosmos. Nobody knows what they looked like or anything about them other than that they spread across the galaxy, and then one day, they just vanished. There was a great war that spanned all corners of the galaxies. We can see the remnants of the battles. If they were fighting a species other than themselves, we don’t know who they were. When someone comes across an abandoned remnant of their civilization, the resident AI, if it is still sane, usually takes the form of the race of the species who discovered it. That is why they look like whomever chooses them. It is said one day they will return. Mothers call upon Primals to instill fear into their young ones. Some systems worship them as gods.” [2]

The Escape Velocity ship came across a group of Gleener scientists studying a Primal graveyard and found the Vog Generation Ship. [7] The original Syndicate nations found Primal Engines in multiple solar systems, and primal production facilities in the Hive Home System.[8][9]

Historians have found evidence of a great war that stretched across the Milky Way, but are unable to identify whether primals were fighting each other or another unknown species.[2] Some speculate that Macro AI technology was at the heart of the conflict.[10]

Story

Book 2

Carl selects "Primal" as his race on the Third Floor, granting him access to both Primal abilities and Human-associated skills.[2] Zev mentions that several crawlers choose this class on the Third Floor. [3] Tsarina Signet originally chooses Carl as the sacrifice for her Ink Marauder Spell due to how she can "sense how powerful it is." [11]

On the first episode of Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, the show explains what a Primal is, showing a previous crawler who choose it but died fighting a Divine Guardian on the Twelfth Floor. [11]
