Player Stats

"Everything is a stat. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not really there. But you’re more right than you realize. None of these top-tier stats you see are real... It’s really a mish-mash of a hundred other stats all combined.” -- Odette (Book 1, Ch. 29, p.245)

Player Stats (AKA "ability scores", "Crawler Statistics") are five core traits that broadly define a creature's abilities as a numerical value. Crawlers can view their stats in the Player Stats Menu of their interface and, after selecting a race and class on the Third Floor, can increase their stats each time they level up.[1]

New Crawlers

All crawlers possess crawler-issue wetware (specifically: Syndicate Crawl Version 47.002.Human).[2] When a crawler enters the Dungeon, the System AI uses this wetware to capture the crawler's "current mental and physical profile" and generate the crawler's Level 1 base stats.[3]

The average adult human enters the Dungeon with 3-5 levels in each of the five core stats. In any stat, a Level 1 score of (0) is unconscious, (3) is the low average, (4) is exactly average, (6) is well above average, and (9-10) are the highest natural scores of "any human who has ever lived."[1][4][5] Crawlers must have a base intelligence score of at least (2) to complete the Tutorial.[1]

Player Stats Menu

After completing the Tutorial, crawlers can view their stats in the "Player Stats Menu" of their Heads-Up Display (HUD). After third floor race and class selection, crawlers can use the Player Stats Menu to view and distribute stat points gained by leveling up. The stats are displayed as:[1]

  • Strength:
  • Intelligence:
  • Constitution:
  • Dexterity:
  • Charisma:

Stats

Each of the five core stats represent a multitude of stats and aptitudes mashed together. When a character increases a stat, their physical and game attributes associated with the stat also increase. Skills are trained and leveled up separately.

When a crawler reaches a base score of (100) in any stat, they receive an achievement and are given three minutes to choose one of three permanent upgrades. One of these upgrades causes every (1) point added to the stat after future levels up to be calculated as (2) points, and the other two upgrades may provide situational bonuses, the ability to impart status or attack effects, or new benefits.[5]

Strength (STR)

Strength affects a crawler's athleticism (such as climbing, jumping, running, swimming, etc. in treacherous conditions), physical ability to lift/move items and exert force, and melee damage dealt.[6][7] The crawler physically feels more powerful as their strength increases.[8]

After reaching a base Strength of (100), a crawler becomes visibly jacked and feels their body get larger. They receive the What Big Muscles You Have! Achievement, and the possible upgrades of Swole, Prison Bitch, Stepson.[5]

Intelligence (INT)

Intelligence affects a crawler's ability to recall information, cast spells, and regenerate mana points (MP).[9] In general, a crawler's total Mana Points are equal to the crawler's Intelligence.[1] A crawler with an Intelligence of (3) regenerates 1 MP per hour, whereas as crawler with an Intelligence of (17) regenerates 1 MP per minute.[1][6]

Intelligence most likely affects a character's ability to investigate and deduce information from clues, as is traditional in ttRPGs.[7] Note how as Donut's intelligence increases, so does her ability to interpret situations and understand subtext (the beginning of Book 5, Chapter 59 sticks out as an example).

Constitution (CON)

Constitution is a measure of crawler's health and stamina, and is directly tied to a crawler's base health and health regeneration. Each point of Constitution increases the crawler's health pool by an unspecified amount, and slightly increases the speed at which a crawler recovers after injury.[1]

Constitution also affects a crawler's "potion cool-down," or how long the crawler must wait between taking potions of any kind. If a crawler takes a potion before the cooldown timer expires, the crawler receives the Poison Debuff status effect.[10] The higher a crawler's constitution, the shorter their potion cool-down period is.[11]

Mordecai notes that Constitution-buffing items "tend to be less common" than items that enhance other stats.[11]

Dexterity (DEX)

Dexterity ties into a character's agility, reflexes, and balance, as well as their ability to move quietly and handle delicate work such as crafting. Characters with high dexterity can perform acrobatic feats such as running on walls and somersaulting.[12]

Charisma (CHA)

Charisma affects a crawler's ability to manipulate or charm NPCs and Mobs, adopt multiple types of the same pet, and to cast bard magic. Other crawlers and certain classes of NPCs are immune to charisma-based charm effects.[8][13]

At a base Charisma of (100), characters may gain passive effects such as the Puppy Dog Benefit.[14]

Hidden Stats

  • Wisdom is technically a core player stat, but crawlers are not able to view or directly change the score; apparently, such changes dramatically alter the person's personality.[1] Still, wisdom can be temporarily adjusted by indirect means inside System AI-controlled Enhancement Zones.[9]
  • Luck is, officially, not a real stat inside the dungeon. Some suspect that the unnatural luck of fairies and sprites suggests otherwise.[15]

Stat Buffs

Various enchanted gear, Personal Space upgrades, and daily buffs may increase a crawler's level in a certain stat by a percentage or a set number of points.

Daily Buffs Glitch

Daily buffs, such as the Good Rest Buff or those gained from using an Upgraded Shower, are applied to the crawler's base stats (before any additional buffs are factored in from equipment, etc.). Due to a bug that has persisted for several seasons of Dungeon Crawler World, the increases from these buffs are not displayed in a crawler's Player Stats Menu, but are reflected in the crawler's Mana Bar and abilities.[16]

Soundbooth Theater Cinematic Audio

The Soundbooth Theater Cinematic Audio departs from the books at several points during the tutorial, including in the introduction of the Player Stats tab, which the narrator introduces as Crawler Statistics:

Now that you're familiar with your crawler interface, we can talk about the function each of these menus includes. Let's start with the most familiar one: and by that, I mean you, of course. Hahoho. Your first menu is your Crawler Statistics. For those of you who aren't familiar with computer and tabletop role-playing games, this section shows your inherent statistics. Go ahead and examine yours now.[17]

The chalkboard behind the narrator proceeds to show example stats and chalk-drawn cartoon figures of the average male and female crawler, followed by a muscular man with a base strength of 7, and an impossibly hourglass-figured woman with a base Charisma of 6. The narrator does not mention Wisdom at all.[17]
