Orren is a Syndicate Liaison. He acts as a fact finder and independent investigator. His cover story was that he was acting as the manager as the Desperado Club.

Description

Orren is a Gondii, a parasitic worm that is a citizen of the Valtay Corporation. As a liaison he is required to be independent of his race, something that Orren takes very seriously.

Carl frequently describes Orren as a "vice principal". He often will sit at his desk, his hands steepled in front of him when confronting the crawler. [1]

Appearance

As a species who is an aquatic parasite, Orren's actual body lives in a glass bowl filled with water (or "fishbowl head") on top of a mechanical humanoid body. He has a hood. Carl describes him as "grim reaper-like". [1]

Story

Book 4

Carl first encounters Orren when the Liason is tasked with investigating the death of Loita. Orren constructs an over-elaborate, but mostly accurate, picture of Carl's actions.

Book 5

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 5
At the beginning of The Butcher's Masquerade (Book), Carl is immediately pulled into Orren's office at the Desperado Club to talk about the Gate of the Feral Gods. Katia Grim is already there. [1] He tries to trick Carl into touching it whilst it was in administrative lock which would have deleted the gate. He is delighted when Carl asks for a lawyer, though is immediately annoyed by Quasar.

Book 6

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 6
Orren is also responsible of negotiating with the System AI if it ever takes control of the show. He explains to crawlers about the System AI and Primal Engines.

Book 7

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 7
Carl gets pulled into the Desperado Club immediately after the death of King Rust, after he reassures Donut via chat that Princess Formidable's plan to pull the Fail Safe won't work. [2]

Speculation

When Donut is attacked in the Desperado Club on the Fourth Floor, a "tall, shadowy figure" emerges from a back door with Astrid before disappearing into the back. This is most likely Orren, as he was a manager of the Desperado club at the time. [3]
