History

Carl's mother's father played center for Oregon State before becoming a prison guard. ^[1]

Book 2

When entering Grimaldi's Traveling Circus, Carl remembers a time when his mom took him to the circus when he was 4. She had run away with Carl from his Father and dragged him to an off-brand circus in Texas. He didn't remember most of circus acts only recalling them from a shoebox of polaroids under his mom's bed. The box had trinkets of the few weeks they had run away. ^[2] The main memory Carl had of the circus was the smell.

My four-year-old mind couldn’t possibly register it at the time, but it was the scent of happiness, of joy, of being a kid, of not being afraid...
I had so little of my mom, so little memory I could call my own. It was one of the few things this fucking place couldn’t possibly take from me, yet that was exactly what had just happened, and it was so unexpected, so violent, so final that I no longer cared about the stupid plan, or of trying to save my life.^[2]
