Katia came strolling up in her regular, human form. She had what looked like an iced tea in her hand with a little umbrella. She sipped on it.
“What was the plan again?” she asked. “Oh yes, I remember. You were going to sneak in, figure out what they had hidden in there, and sneak out again undetected. Good job.” (Book 4, Chapter 7)
Katia Grimmsdottir (this was shortened to "Grim" in her crawler ID) is a former art professor and a crawler from Iceland. She joins Carl and Donut's party on the Third Floor.
Description
Katia was a university art professor in Reykjavik, Iceland, before the transformation.[1] A single thirty-something, Katia is well-traveled and fluent in Icelandic, German, Russian, and English.[2] [3]
She enters the Dungeon with her friend and fellow professor, Eva. The two join Hekla and Brynhild's Daughters and participate in a neighborhood boss and a borough boss battle before descending to the Third Floor, where they are separated from the party for class selection. After her game guide, Bannon, persuades her to take the Monster Truck Driver Class and Doppelgänger race, Katia transforms into a tank with a momentum-based constitution buff who can shape her mass (i.e. body and equipped gear) like clay into any form of equal mass... if she can just figure out how. By the time Hekla asks the Royal Court to add Katia to their party, Katia is ten levels behind and the System AI has only recently graduated her visible race from "What the f-word?" to "Human."[4] With Carl and Donut's influence, Katia soon learns to use her skills to kill with style.
When Carl and Donut are removed from the fifth floor, Katia assumes leadership of the ongoing bubble quest and succeeds. Enraged to learn that members of Brynhild's Daughters are returning to Eva and dying, she informally splits from the Royal Court on the Sixth Floor to team up with Louis, Firas, Daniel Bautista, Florin, and Gwen's team. They follow a trail of Eva's victims across The Hunting Grounds and Katia finds the "gift" Eva left for her on one of the former daughter's corpses: blitz sticks.
Katia and Bautista had been in contact since meeting on the second floor and develop a romantic/sexual relationship on the sixth floor, even as Katia becomes addicted to drugs and the false memories they create. Katia's self-destructive habits worsen after she kills Eva, and Eva's last act is placing the Enchanted Crown of the Sepsis Whore upon Katia's head, ensuring that only Katia or Donut can leave the Ninth Floor by traditional means.
Appearance
On Earth, While Sleeping, and On Shows. In her natural human form, Katia has short black hair, pale skin, and "light wide-set eyes that sat at an odd angle on her face."[2] Although Carl describes her as "stunning," she hadn't liked her hair or her nose; they were the first traits she changed.
The Third Floor. Katia struggled to master her race, sculpting her appearance using the reflection off of a health potion bottle, and it shows. Her face generously looks "like a Juan Gris painting" (a twentieth century artist known for cubism), her hair follicles are too large, and even her blue track suit and snow boots look poorly sewn.[5]
The Fourth Floor. With Donut's encouragement, Katia slowly transforms to become more "vibrant" and "interesting." Her new look is marked by a purple mohawk, a leather outfit, and black shoes.[6]

Personality
Insecure, shy, and a little awkward, Katia is initially afraid of almost everything in the Dungeon and struggles to understand her class and race. Still, she is a fundamentally good person: when Fools Who Broke the Glass Quest triggers shortly after she joins the Royal Court, spelling her near-certain death, she focuses on saving NPCs and encourages Donut and Carl to save themselves.[8] She has a quiet sense of humor and is clearly not a person who is used to or comfortable with being noticed.
With Donut's "advice" and Carl's very special brand of support, Katia starts to come into her own.
History
On Earth, Katia has previously visited at least Moscow and Tokyo. Although Katia claims that she and Eva were "friends but not great friends" who ate lunch together occasionally at the university, Eva knows a great deal about her including: Katia's ex, Fannar, left Katia for one of his students; that Katia was unable to adopt; and enough of Katia's secrets to taunt her.[9][10]
