Imani

Imani is a member of the Meadow Lark party and guildmaster of Safehome Yolanda. She is one of Carl and Donut's most trusted allies in the Dungeon.

Description

Before the Transformation, Imani was a caregiver at Meadow Lark Elder Care Facility in Wenatchee, WA. She entered the Dungeon with a number of patients and former staff members, and received a longsword in an early loot box. When she and Brandon Andrews were attacked while escorting patients to Mistress Tiatha's Tutorial Guild Hall, she was forced to use her longsword to slay twelve of her former patients; as a result, she gained multiple Player Killer Skulls, a Desperado Pass Tattoo, and a Savage Box.[1]

On the Third Floor, Imani selects the Obsidian Butterfly race and Fire Spiritualist class. She is a healer class capable of imparting buffs with her wings.

Quiet and religious, Imani is a healer at heart but will do whatever is necessary to protect others.

She can be a bit of a gossip, even if she doesn't seem like it. [2]

Appearance

As a human, Imani is around 20 years-old, maybe 90 lbs, and her "terrified, hollowed-out eyes suggested she had seen some shit."[3] She enters the Dungeon wearing medical scrubs, but collects a sword and magical cloak within a few days.[1]

After her transformation on the 3rd floor, she becomes a species called the Obsidian Butterfly. She is described to be a "gaunt, skull-faced vision." She weighs half of her original weight and has a white skull painted on her face. reminiscent of the Danger Dingoes. She has four translucent butterfly wings. The wings are similar to the colors of a monarch butterfly, but more saturated. Her wingspan is about 12 feet and the wings pass through physical objects.

History

Imani grew up in Detroit, Michigan, but does not otherwise talk about her past or the people in it.[4] Near the end of the first phase of the Eighth Floor, she makes a brief remark that suggests she or someone she cared for had frequently made excuses for a loved one's drug use.[5]

At some point, she moved to Wenatchee, Washington, and found work as a nightshift caregiver at Meadow Lark Elder Care Facility. She is only 20 years old at the time of the transformation, so she was most likely a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) rather than a Registered Nurse (RN).[1] Her tasks would have included direct care such as feeding, bathing, and dressing patients; serving meals; making beds and tidying; taking vital signs; setting up medical equipment and providing assistance when needed; and monitoring patients' conditions and behaviors.[6]

Despite their age differences, Yolanda Martinez (another CNA) became one of Imani's best friends.[7]

Story

First Floor

“And how are we going to do that?” a new voice asked. It was Imani, speaking for the first time.[8]

Before they met the Royal Court of Princess Donut, Imani, Yolanda Martinez, Brandon Andrews, and Chris Andrews defeated a neighborhood boss that looks like a floating crystal. They discovered the portals/bathroom glitch when it killed one member of the party.[1] Imani gained a longsword, an enchanted cloak, and an unspecified item that boosts her strength.[1][9]

They escorted their elderly patients to Mistress Tiatha's Tutorial Guild Hall in small groups, but one group was attacked by a mob that inflicted some kind of burn damage. When the patients couldn't escape a slow painful death, Imani had no choice but to use her new longsword to kill (12) of her former patients, earning her Player Killer Skulls.[1] She gained multiple Player-Killer Skulls, a Desperado Pass Tattoo, and a Savage Box containing PVP Coupons for the surviving members of her party.[1][10] She attempted to burn the coupons and, when that didn't work, left them behind on the First Floor even though Brandon encouraged her to keep them.[10]

Although Imani was standoffish and skeptical of Carl and Donut at first, she joined them and her coworkers (plus Agatha) in the battle against the Ball of Swine. Carl notes that while the others look afraid, "Imani clutched her sword in two hands, looking grim." When the ball explodes into a swarm of confused Tusklings and Yolanda falls unconscious, Imani stands over her friend, screaming and crying and swinging her sword.[9] In the aftermath, she immediately administers a Healing Potion to Yolanda and picks up an enormous strap-on dildo with two fingers before dropping it in disgust.[11]

Second Floor

On the Second Floor, Imani sits down with Carl and matter-of-factly explains how each tool in the Enchanted Pedicure Kit of the Sylph works, one at a time.[12] When the Royal Court and other able-bodied members of Meadow Lark depart to train up their skills, Imani stays behind to watch the (39) remaining patients.[13]

After the defeat of the Rage Elemental, she and the rest of the Meadowlark team enter the stairwell for the Third Floor. Just as she's going in, she looks up into the air and raises a middle finger. [14]

Book 3

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3

Brandon Andrews sends his goodbye message to Carl, Elle McGibbons and Imani. [15] Imani loses a way to communicate with Carl when Brandon dies, so when she meets Bautista in the Desperado Club she has him send a message to Carl for her. She mentions how she will be in the club every night after the Recap Episode and she needs to talk to him. [16]

Carl and Donut go to meet up with her at the Desperado Club. She talks to Carl about Chris Andrews and how he changed after changing his race on the Third Floor. When Donut is attacked by Ji-Hoon and his companion, Imani gives Carl and Donut buffs with her wings. [17]

Elle reaches out to Carl again explaining how the Meadow Lark team is trapped at station 275. They had killed a Krakaren Clone (Fourth Floor) boss monster but the trains stopped coming down the lines. Imani mentions how Quan Ch is farming the engineers for experience but is wrecking all the trains, stranding crawlers. Since the later stations are miles apart from each other, walking on the tracks is going to take a prohibitively long time. The monsters are starting to transform since they are not getting their drugs in time. [18]

Carl asks Imani for more information about the PVP coupons, and she mentions that Donut was asking her about them when she got her own Player Killer Skull. [10] When Carl asks Donut about them directly, Donut says that Imani already told her Carl was asking about it and that Imani can be a big gossip. [2]
