Heads-Up Display (HUD)

The Heads-Up Display (HUD) (alternatively called the UI, Crawler Interface, Menus, etc.) is a core Dungeon mechanic that allows crawlers to view their status and access a list of Crawler Menus. It seems to be tied to crawler wetware.

Before the Tutorial

Error. You may not access this until you have completed the tutorial.[1]

After entering the surface stairwells and before entering the First Floor, crawlers gain access to a basic HUD.[2] The HUD's functions are limited until the crawler visits a Tutorial Guild Hall on one of the first three floors and completes the Tutorial, which gives the crawler access to the expanded HUD and Crawler Menus.[3]

Early functions include:

  • A countdown timer to level collapse appears in the upper right corner of the crawler's vision.[2]
  • The crawler can view and mentally "X" out of tool tips, including descriptions of other crawlers, mobs, NPCs, and points of interest.[2]
  • After a mob takes damage, a health bar appears above its head.[2]
  • The crawler can view achievements and notifications when they happen.
    • When in combat, new achievement and other notifications appear as little messages in the upper left of a crawler's vision. Otherwise, the messages auto-play.[2]
  • Languages are translated to Syndicate Standard.[1]
  • The System AI's announcements are accompanied by text which cannot be dismissed, like subtitles.[2]

Operation

Operating the HUD feels like a "slight, haptic tingling" in your brain. You can view infoboxes describing crawlers or items by focusing on the object, and close the boxes by mentally clicking "X" in the tooltip's upper corner.[4]

Information on the HUD disappears when you close your eyes.[5]

Access

Inside the Dungeon, the HUD is always active unless the crawler is in the presence of a Dungeon Administrator.[6]

Crawlers typically would not have access to the HUD outside of the current Dungeon Floor. Due to Borant Corporation's shoestring budget and cheap Enhancement Zones, participants in the current season of Dungeon Crawler World can access their HUD and Menus as long as they are physically located between the Earth's core and sea level.[7]

HUD Components

The various components can be customized by focusing on an HUD item and thinking about moving it, or by toggling settings in the various Crawler Menus.

Default Layout

After completing the tutorial, the basic HUD consists of (clockwise from the upper left):

  1. Notifications are sorted into a folder at the top left of a crawler's vision. The folder blinks when there are unopened notifications. Notifications include:
    1. Crawler Notifications, which are seen only by the crawler. These include notices such as "You've gained a skill level!" and "Level up! You are now level -."[3][8]
    2. System Messages, seen by everyone on every floor, and may be read in different voices.[3]
    3. Floor-Specific Notifications, seen only by occupants of the current floor.[3]
  2. A Health Bar appears as a long green bar in the top right. It represents the crawler's overall HP.[3]
  3. A Mana Bar appears in the top right, directly below the Health Bar, and represents the crawler's mana points as a status bar of unspecified color.[3]
  4. A Countdown Timer to level collapse is in the top right, below the mana bar.[3]
  5. A Minimap appears in the bottom right.
  6. The Hotlist is centered at the bottom of the Crawler's vision, and contains ten spots that can hold potions, special items, or spells.[3] Items such as potions can stack up to (999) per slot, and taking a potion directly from the Hotlist uses the item and applies the effect without requiring the crawler to physically drink it.[8] Humans cannot equip gear directly from the hotlist.

Optional Components

Crawlers can customize their HUD, and even add and remove components. Optional add-ons include a View Counter (which may be displayed as a dial or in more detail) and various upgrades received from third parties (e.g. Neural Enhancers).
