Father

Carl's Father is the boogeyman of Carl's childhood.

Description

Carl's Father demanded "respect" from his wife and son, and seemed to care more for his 1965 Harley Davidson Motorcycle than for his family. He was a bully, and the sort of man who would drive away from an accident with a muttered, "That's a shame," and who had no issue walking away from his teenage son.[1][2]

In his prime, Father was a motorcycle fan (a "weekend warrior") who enjoyed drinking, smoking, and getting rowdy with his friends.[3] He never took his son for a ride on his motorcycle.[2]

Appearance

At his prime, Carl's Father was roughly 220 lbs and built like a linebacker, though Carl eventually grew "to be much bigger than him."[4][5] He dyed his hair brown and was covered in tattoos.[4][3] Carl shares his nose, eyes, and hair.[4]

Story

History

Carl's Father was a linebacker in his youth.[5] After marrying Carl's Mother, he installed an original Frogger arcade console in their basement. When his friends came over to "smoke and drink and get loud," Carl's Mother would lock Carl in the basement for hours with nothing to do but try to beat his own high scores.[3] At some point, he and his friends took young Carl's slingshot and broke the band while firing rocks at squirrels.[6][7]

Carl last spoke to his father twelve years before the transformation, when his father walked out of Carl's life forever.[2] Carl was fifteen years old, grieving, and expected his father to hit him; instead, his father just laughed.[8]

Carl: "You're a bully. You're a bully and nobody likes you. It's why mom left."
Carl's Father: "I don't need you to like me. But you will respect me."[9]

Book 1

Carl thinks about his father while he's riding the Goblin Copper Chopper, holding his legs out so they wouldn't burn. [2]

When he picks up a Slingshot from the corpse of a Clurichaun, he remembers having a slingshot as a child. His father borrowed it to mess around with his friends and broke the band. He said he would replace the slingshot but never did. [6]
