The Manual of Style (also referred to as Article Guidelines) is the recommended guidelines for creating and editing articles on the Dungeon Crawler Carl Wiki, and is intended to prevent duplicate pages and promote consistency across the database. We encourage all contributors, old and new, to browse this section and our Spoiler Policy before editing or creating content.
A. Getting Started
Welcome to the Wiki! We encourage everyone to take a moment to have some fun and add the "{{User Info}}" infobox to your profile. Tell us who you are in the Dungeon!
B. Creating Pages: Naming Conventions
Variations in capitalization, spelling, and page names can create duplicate pages and broken links. To reduce confusion and keep our growing database in order, all new articles should be titled using the following conventions:
- B1) Double-Check.
- Before creating a new article, search the keywords to verify that the article does not already exist. Note that all Dungeon Floors have pages.
- If the article does exist but the title is misspelled or does not fit our naming conventions, you can flag it! Open the Source Editor and type
{{delete | Rename: correct name}}at the top of the page. An admin will come along and sort it out. (For more information on how this works, see {{delete}}.)
- B2) Don't start with articles (e.g. "The")
- Even if something is referred to with an article throughout the text, starting a page title with an article changes how/where it's sorted. So if you make a page for "the Mankini of Engorging," the page's name should be only "Mankini of Engorging".
- B3) Do not capitalize prepositions or articles in a page name. These include but are not limited to
- and
- at
- by
- for
- from
- in
- of
- on
- or
- the
- to
- B4) Do not capitalize file extensions.
- Always use lowercase for .jpg, .png, .gif, etc.
- B5) Capitalize every word in the title (except those listed above).
- Even if the title is not capitalized in the book, such as in an achievement like "You've killed a mob!", capitalize every word in the page title (e.g. "You've Killed a Mob!"). This prevents duplication, confusion, and broken links.
- B6) Use Character's names, not titles.
- For the sake of consistency, page names should be limited to the character's name (e.g. "Donut" rather than "Princess Donut").
C. Writing Articles: Basics
The Wiki exists so that readers and content creators can easily look up information. We're here so returning readers can look up what a Toraline is, homebrew DMs can craft the perfect Dungeon, artists can verify Donut's eye color, fanfic writers can describe the First Floor in exhaustive detail, and fans can dig deep into theories. The wiki's content should reflect its purpose.
C1) Write in clear English. Use punctuation. Do a quick spellcheck. Some typos and tangents are expected, but please avoid incoherent strings of run-on text.
C2) Cite your work. To ensure that the Wiki is a reliable and trustworthy resource, all information should include a text citation. We only require book and chapter citations so that anyone can look something up, regardless of whether they prefer the text or audio format. Citations can be easily added using the "Cite" tool in the Visual Editor toolbar, and are even easier with our {{ref}} and {{cite}} tools!
C3) Include Spoiler Warnings. See Spoiler Policy for our policies and an overview of our tools.
C4) Link to other pages. The first time the subject of another page is mentioned (either in an article or, on longer pages, in a section), write out the subject's full title and create a link to the page. You do not need to link to the page again in that section. For example:
The neighbor's dog, Angel, bit down on Donut's chew toy. Angel then peed on the carpet.
C5) Assign the page to the proper category. We've put a lot of work into consolidating categories and ensuring that every page can be found in the category tree. If you bump into a subject that doesn't seem to fit in any established categories, please reach out to an admin's message board or drop a line on Discord!

D. Writing Articles: General Formatting
We are working on standardizing formats across articles. Generally, articles will follow this format from top to bottom where possible, leaving out any unnecessary or inapplicable sections:
- Spoiler Heading.
- If the page includes unmarked spoilers for Book 3 or later, then place the Spoiler Heading {{SpoilH}} at the very top of the page. See Spoiler Policy for instructions.
- Decorative Quote. Pick your favorite (or the most relevant) quote about the subject and showcase it at the top of the page, under the Spoiler Heading (if applicable).
- In Visual Editor, use: "Insert" > "Template" > "Quote".
- In Source Editor, use the {{Quote}} template.
- Try to limit decorative quotes to one per page; all other quotes should be worked into the page text or formatted as blockquotes.
- Don't forget to cite the source!
- Infobox.
- Where applicable, add an infobox. In Visual Editor, you can do this using the "Insert" > "Infoboxes."
- We currently have infoboxes for Achievements, Characters, Classes, Races, Groups, Items, Locations, Quests, Spells, Status Effects, and Syndicate Shows.
- Top Level Summary.
- Above any header, and below the decorative quote, there should be a succinct 1-2 sentence summary of the subject. The page's subject should be identified by its full name, in bold, in the first sentence. For example:
Matt Dinniman is a Crawler from Earth.
- Headings & Sections.
- Clearly label each section. See Manual of Style#E. Writing Articles: Format by Page Type for an overview of recommended sections and order.
- AI Descriptions
- In general, the AI descriptions will not match other "Descriptions." These sections should be formatted as blockquotes with bold text, to show that the section is copied from the text and to better match the source material. We recommend including the exact page(s) or timestamps in the citation, in addition to the standard book and chapter.
- References.
- At the end of the page, create one final section called "References."
- In Visual Editor, select "Insert" > "Reference List".
- In Source Editor, type
<references/>.
E. Writing Articles: Format by Page Type
Below is a list of recommended headings for the different types of pages. Not every page will use every heading, and some pages may require special headings.
Achievements
- {{SpoilH}} (if applicable).
- {{Achievement}} infobox.
- Top-Level Summary should state the achievement's name, and explain how any crawler might receive the achievement or specify that this is a unique achievement.
- AI Description. How the AI describes the achievement, formatted as a blockquote with bold text.
- Story. What did Carl or Donut do to receive this achievement, and on which floor? What did they receive in their box?
- References. In Visual Editor, select "Insert" > "Reference List". In Source Editor, type
<references/>. - Categories: Category:Achievements and Category:Floor #, where # is the floor that the achievement was awarded on. This may not be the same floor that the achievement was opened and read on.
- Examples: You've Killed a Mob! Achievement
Characters
- {{SpoilH}} (if applicable).
- {{Character info}} infobox.
- Top-Level Summary states the character's full name, and indicates whether they are a crawler, NPC, alien, etc. We like to include a brief, spoiler-free-ish note about the character's relations to other characters, such as team affiliation or whether they are allies to the Royal Court.
- Description. This is an overview of the character and their personality, motives, background, etc. It should only include information available through the book # specified
- Appearance. If I wanted to illustrate this character, what details would I need?
- History. Where applicable, the character's life before the Dungeon. In most cases, this will be covered in the Description.
- Story. Share the character's experience in the Dungeon, or how they have impacted Carl and Donut. Remember to abide by our Spoiler Policy and take advantage of our awesome spoiler tools!
- Progression. The character's levels, stats, and gear, broken up by book or by floor. Once again, remember our Spoiler Policy.
- Trivia. For the weird facts that don't fit anywhere, like the exact size of Carl's foot.
- Speculation. Theories that make sense based on stated evidence but cannot be supported or verified by the text.
- References. In Visual Editor, select "Insert" > "Reference List". In Source Editor, type
<references/>. - {{Navbox Char}} navbox at the bottom of the page, below the references section.
Note that our protagonists, Carl and Donut, have their own categories (Category:Carl and Category:Donut) and more page options than other characters.
Groups
- {{Group}} infobox.
- Description
- History
- Story
- Pop Culture. Or "Dungeon Lore."
- Trivia
- Speculation
- References.
Items
- {{Item}} infobox.
- AI Description. What the AI says the item does.
- Description. What the item actually does, and how it works.
- Appearance. If I wanted to illustrate this item, what details would I need? Sometimes this will be covered in description.
- Operation. For digging deep into how something works, like the Goblin Copper Chopper.
- Story. Relevance to the story so far, including how/if it came into the Royal Court's possession.
- Trivia.
- Speculation.
- References.
- {{Navbox Items}} <-- add to the bottom of every items page, below the references.
Races & Mobs
- {{Race Infobox}}
- Description
- Appearance
- Subraces. Elves come in so many shapes and sizes that we ought to pull them apart, but races like Skyfowl have subcultures and subraces that deserve to be outlined but aren't necessarily worth their own page.
- Subclasses. For example, Unvaccinated Clurichaun Rev-Up Consultants are a subclass of Clurichaun.
- Story. A brief summary of interactions with the Royal Court or others. This section is not particularly crucial on race pages.
- Dungeon Lore. Some races, mobs, and bosses are tied to Dungeon Lore and the mysteries of the Volcano Level. Expound on it here!
- Trivia
- Speculation
- References.
Skills or Spells
- {{Spells}} infobox.
- Description. How does this spell or skill function for any crawler? Does the crawler glow blue when casting?
- Level Up. What changes about the spell as it levels up?
- Story. How the Royal Court or your favorite crawler gained the skill, and/or how they've used it.
- Trivia
- Speculation
