I laughed. “Hey, Donut. If we were back home, you’d finally be able to knock that vase off the high shelf.”
“That thing was a menace, Carl. It was haunted.”[1]
Before the transformation, Carl, Beatrice, and Princess Donut shared an apartment in Seattle, WA, just over half a mile (0.8 km) from the coast of the Puget Sound.[2][3] Their two-bedroom apartment was on the second floor, and was approximately half the size of an individual's Personal Space in the Dungeon.[2][4]
Layout
Although small, the apartment had a dedicated kitchen and living room.[5] Donut had a cat tree beside a window, and Bea decorated with approximately "a million candles."[6][7] In the living space, a couch faced the television, and a shelf containing knickknacks and an heirloom vase was mounted high above the TV, just out of Donut's reach.[8]
Carl and Bea shared the Master Bedroom, but the second bedroom was mostly dedicated to Donut; it was filled with her Best-in-Show ribbons, Best-in-Breed ribbons, trophies, and some fifty framed photographs of Donut "looking all fuzzy and pissed off."[2] The closet was full of boxes of leggings Bea purchased as part of some MLM pyramid-scheme similar to LuLaRoe.[9]
The Building
The apartment building was seven stories tall (until it wasn't). Outside, a tall tree stood close to certain second floor windows.[2]
Services
Laundry. The washer and dryer were located in the basement. At the time of the collapse, the dryer contained Carl's boots.[2]
Other Tenants
Basement. Mr. Roth, the landlord, lived alone in the the basement apartment.[10]
First Floor. Mrs. Parsons lived under Carl's apartment, or at least close enough to the tree to be the only person woken up by Donut's howling.[2] Marjory Williams and her indoor/outdoor cat Gravy Boat shared another first floor apartment; Marjory's moped was booted by parking enforcement and one of the few things to survive the collapse.[2]
Second Floor. An unidentified woman and a cocker spaniel dog named Angel lived on the second floor. Beatrice and the owner were extremely friendly.[11]
